The Ask
The goal was to propose interventions tackling URBAN HEAT ISLAND effect within the context of DELHI.
RESEARCH / MAIN CAUSE
Delhi, a Union Territory, ranked fourth globally for PM2.5 levels in 2022 (IQAir). Its air quality has worsened from 'very poor' to 'hazardous,' making it the world’s most polluted city. PM pollution blocks sunlight, and without it, land temperatures rise. It also causes acid rain and crop damage.
BENEFITS OF MOSS
-Absorbs PM 2.5 pollution and purifies air
-Absorbs nutrients from free water on their leaves
-Becomes dormant during the hot, dry times of the year
-Tends to grow where:
1.The soil is very compacted
2.The drainage is poor
3.The soil stays very wet for periods of time
4.Where the fertility is poor
OUR APPROACH
The inherent characteristic of moss enables it to disperse its spores and grow independently. Any resale that occurs will result in an improvement in quality, as moss requires minimal maintenance and can regenerate itself. However, significant vandalism leading to damage in the area should be promptly reported to the government. Strict actions must be taken in accordance with The Prevention of Damage to Public Property
Act, 1984.”
